Pienza

Visiting the jewel of the Val d’Orcia is one of those things to do at least once in a lifetime! Immerse yourself in the harmony of the “ideal city”, a real stone jewel wanted by Enea Silvio Piccolomini, the future Pope Pius II.

Many of the streets of the Renaissance Pienza bear romantic or evocative names: cross Pienza walking along the main street, Corso Rossellino, which is overlooked by artisan shops, restaurants and flowered balconies.

In the middle of Corso Rossellino opens “Piazza Pio II”, which overlooks the Town Hall. Continue to Piazza di Spagna with its beautiful well, and if you want to enjoy a unique show, take a detour along the very romantic Via del Casello. Here you can admire the whole Val d’Orcia from above: a breathtaking spectacle that you can enjoy tasting the renowned Pecorino di Pienza, perhaps accompanied by an excellent glass of wine.

The four streets of Via del Casello are worth a visit: Via della Fortuna, Via dell’Amore, Via del Bacio and Via del Buia. From here you will take wonderful photos.

For lovers of sacred art, a visit to the Cathedral of the Assumption cannot be missed.

Also in Piazza Pio II, you cannot miss the Piccolomini Palace, the ancient papal residence. Today it houses the museum where many relics belonging to the Piccolomini family are kept, a precious collection of medieval and modern works of art.

Another museum worthy of note is the Diocesan Museum of Pienza. It is based in the Palazzo Vescovile (Palazzo Borgia) located in the famous square of Pienza, and houses works by Lorenzetti, Vecchietta and Signorelli in its rooms.
