Montalcino

Montalcino is a must for those who want to visit the Val d’Orcia! This is the homeland of the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine, one of the most famous and well-known wines in the world. You cannot fail to indulge in a nice tasting in one of the many wineries in the area! To the south of Monte Amiata, expanses and expanses of vineyards grow that surround the fairytale medieval village, surrounded by an ancient castle and a large and mighty wall.
A village with a great history, Montalcino derives from Mons Ilcinus, or the mount of holm oaks (in fact, the inhabitants of Montalcino are called ilcinesi). Walking through the vineyards that lead to the enchanting village, your attention will be immediately captured by the mighty fortress, a pentagonal castle site of important events such as the Jazz & Wine Festival. A festival animated by music, theater, dance and of course Brunello tastings that will take place in the Enoteca della Fortezza.

Here there are many things to see such as the Civic Museum, housed in the former convent of Sant’Agostino. The Civic and Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art of Montalcino collects numerous works of medieval and modern art and even finds from the Bronze, Iron and Etruscan ages. Another attraction not to be missed is the Madonna del Soccorso, a splendid Renaissance church from which you will enjoy an incredible panoramic view from which you can even see the profile of Siena.

Arriving at the main square, Piazza del Popolo, you will find Palazzo dei Priori, the seat of the municipality. You can also visit the bishop’s palace, but the atmosphere that reigns along the streets and alleys of the village, between flowered balconies and artisan shops is priceless. Stroll through the streets of this charming village enjoying a cut of Tuscan cold cuts and cheeses accompanied by one of the most renowned wines in the world. Finally, do not forget to visit the magical Abbey of Sant’Antimo just a few minutes from the town: a wonderful Benedictine monastic complex, one of the most important Romanesque religious sites in Tuscany.
