Castiglione d’Orcia

Located in the heart of the Val d’Orcia, Castiglione d’Orcia is a typical Tuscan medieval village perched on a rocky slope of Mount Amiata. Famous for its panorama, Castiglione d’Orcia is a unique point of view on the Val d’Orcia, as well as being just a few minutes away from the splendid spa town of Bagni San Filippo or from other picturesque villages such as Campiglia d’Orcia, Vivo d’Orcia or Ripa d’Orcia.

Not far from Castiglione stands the Rocca di Tentennano, used for a long time as a sentinel over the area. It is said to have also hosted Saint Catherine of Siena who, according to tradition, learned to read and write here thanks to a miracle. Arriving here, you cannot miss this imposing tower that overlooks the adjacent village of Rocca d’Orcia and stands out over the entire valley.
We advise you to climb the Rocca and enjoy the view but we already warn you that the photos will not be able to do justice to such beauty: here you can enjoy a few hours of relaxation thanks to a restaurant and a refreshment point. The tower is open to the public in the summer every day and on weekends almost all year round.

Castiglione d’Orcia

Once you have visited the fortress, we suggest you follow the walk that will take you to the historic center of Castiglione d’Orcia and visit the village. You will find the picturesque Piazza Il Vecchietta, paved with cobblestones in unworked stones and the splendid 15th century travertine well.
Continuing, you will meet the church of Santa Maria Maddalena and the Pieve dei Santi Stefano e Degna, another panoramic point of the Val d’Orcia.
