Radicofani Fortress

The fortress (or fortress) of Radicofani is a historic fortress located in the municipality of Radicofani, along the via Cassia or via Francigena which in ancient times connected Rome with Tuscany and Northern Italy. Visit this tower built in 1200, visible from tens of kilometers and from whose terrace you can admire the beautiful Val d’Orcia.

The mighty Fortress or Rocca di Radicofani has stood above the village for more than a thousand years. More than to any great personality, however, the castle is linked to a character: Ghino di Tacco. In 1297 the famous “gentleman bandit” took possession of the castle and made it, for several years, the base for his raids. The ambushes of this local Robin Hood, considered for a good purpose, are also narrated by Dante in “The Divine Comedy” and by Boccaccio in the “Decameron”.

Arriving at the Fortress, here you will find the Cassero Museum inside the castle, where archaeological finds from the Etruscan age up to the sixteenth century are also kept. Furthermore, you can visit the ancient underground passages, the ramparts and the walkways on the walls, imagining yourself in the Middle Ages among gentlemen thieves.
