Piazza Pio II in Pienza is dedicated to one of the most important characters who have shaped the history of this corner of the Val d’Orcia: Enea Silvio Piccolomini, future Pope Pius II, who in 1462 commissioned the architect Bernardo Rossellino to transform the medieval native village of Corsignano.
Piccolomini wanted to make his city of origin a shining example of Renaissance architecture, and the Piazza is the exact realization of this purpose.
The square thus became trapezoidal in shape with herringbone brick flooring, becoming the center and fulcrum of the town’s life. All the architectures that overlook it were created by Bernardo Rossellino between 1459 and 1462, such as the Cathedral of the Assumption, while on the left stands Palazzo Borgia, now home to the Diocesan Museum, which was donated by Pope Pius II to the Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, future Pope Alexander VI.
The Palazzo Comunale also overlooks the main square of Pienza, while Palazzo degli Ammannati is located at the corner with Corso Rossellino. Everything in the design of the square reveals the composed and meditated beauty, typically Renaissance.
